Whoever first finds himself in Mani faces his barren, arid, inaccessible place… The place of Petra, the Sun, the sea…. The mourning, the mourning, the Towers but also the rigid and ruthless inhabitants who remain the same, adorned with pride and honor, as their own history protects. Agios Nikolaos is a picturesque fishing village of Exo Mani (Messinian Mani) located 49 km southeast of Kalamata. At the entrance of the village, on a rock, dominates the Artillery of Gerakari.

The first name of the village was Selinitsa, which means little Moon or little Eleni. According to the legend, Paris landed on the beach of the area and grabbed the Beautiful Eleni. "Selinitsa, the Moon is ringing when you hear it, as Paris silences Eleni". This place is barren but charming, because the sea accompanies the mountain with their catalyst light. The architecture of the past ties in with the historical heritage of the Mani, which transcends the boundaries of legend, and natural beauty, when combined with goodness, gives warmth to the hearts of people, as if one were in the kingdom of heaven.

This unruly place, dotted with picturesque settlements, captivates the visitor with its unique landscape surrounded by the deep blue sea of the Messinian gulf. The area of Agios Nikolaos is identified with ancient Pefnos. Opposite the neighboring village of Agios Dimitrios, is the islet of Pefnos where according to mythology the Dioscuri, Kastoras and Polydefkis, twin half-brothers, were born from an egg. Polydeuces was immortal, son of Zeus while Castor was mortal, son of Tyndareus.

In Agios Dimitrios, the imposing Tower of Christeas, the Captain of the area, stands out, which played a decisive role in the liberation of Kalamata and in the revolution of 1821. From this particular tower, the flagship of Ibrahim and Tutrap in June 1826.
